The public worship of God
lies at the heart of Peace Presbyterian Church. Each Sunday morning, our
people gather in our lovely sanctuary to raise our voices in praise and
thanksgiving to the One who created us and saves us.
We try to structure our services of worship so they will convey joy-filled
solemnity – an attitude that acknowledges who this One is whom we are worshipping
and who we are as worshippers.
From early September to late May, on a typical Sunday, the people are led by a
lay liturgist, pastor, organist, and choir. The order of service reflects
our Reformed understanding of worship as patterned in the Presbyterian
Church (USA) Book of Common Worship. The people actively participate
through singing hymns, a time of greeting, the call to worship, the
service of confession, and by offering prayer concerns during the prayers
of the people. Most Sundays, an excellent adult choir provides special
music and helps lead us in the singing of hymns and service music.
About once each month, a fine youth choir provides music leadership.
Time for a children’s message usually finds a dozen or more children
sitting near the pastor on the chancel steps.
Once during each of the summer months, we hold contemporary/praise services
of worship. Our director of music has assembled a small praise band which
leads us in singing praise songs written during the past 25 years.
We hear two passages of scripture each Sunday. Our pastor’s sermons attempt
to help the worshippers hear God’s word in a way that makes it possible for
them to respond to it in some practical way and/or to meditate on the word so
spiritual growth can happen.
St. Paul suggests that the church is like a body with many members.
This same metaphor helps us understand a service of worship – a body with
many parts. On any given Sunday, God touches different people through
different parts of the service. It may be through a well-loved expression
in an old-favorite hymn, or through an apt phrase in a prayer, or through
an idea expounded upon by the preacher, or through the friendly touch on the
arm and smile of an old friend. In many different ways, God’s grace is
mediated to us in our common worship at Peace Church.
Come, worship with us at Peace Church. Experience the joy and peace which is so significant to us.
